The Poverty of Philosophy
Everyone acts according to their own philosophy. Understanding and refining one's philosophy is an essential component of progress in life. This process can be approached through trial and error, through thoughtful reflection, or through a combination thereof. The process can be aided inestimably by dialog with and study of the works of those who are engaged in the same process, or have carried it out before.
The aim of philosophy is truth. One suffers from a poverty of philosophy when they wander aimlessly far from the truth.
Tax Policy
I have two new articles published at Salem News concerning tax policy.
Investing for Value
I am going to begin covering business, investment, and economic news for Salem-News.com. My first article has been published there and it is entitle Investing for Value.
I will continue publishing my usual material here in the same sporadic and unorganized fashion as usual, but I will be contributing more regular and serious work in the business/economics field to Salem News.
With Enemies Like These, Who Needs Friends?
In what appears to be a press release issue on the behalf of an insurance industry trade group, The Oregonian attempts to debunk the notion that private health insurance is a highly profitable industry. According to the Oregonian, “insurers are an expedient target for leaders who want a government-run plan in the market place.”
“Quick quiz: what do railroads, Yum Foods, and Yahoo have in common? Answer: they are all more profitable than the health insurance industry.” You see, the health insurance industry has “anemic” profit margins of only “6 percent give or take a point or two.”
Jeremy Scahill on the Establishment Media
Jeremy Scahill is one of the best real journalists around. In this discussion he talks about his encounters with "establishment" media figures and their mindset and approach to journalism. Very interesting piece.
Summer Gardening - 2009
I planted a garden for the first time this summer. This is my first year of having a house, so this has been my first opportunity to work on growing food. The results were generally very positive, but there is enormous room for improvement.
I dug up three rows in my back yard, and on them planted two rows of corn on separate rows, and two rows of tomatoes on one row. Each row was fertilized with horse manure once before planting, and no other fertilizers or pesticides were used.
The Feminisation of Higher Education?
Yes, women are entering higher education in ever-larger numbers. But they are entering at the behest of the men who keep a beady eye on the corridors of intellectual power. There is a method to the masculine hierarchy’s apparent madness in allowing this female invasion. Crude segregation has finally, belatedly, lost out (less than 40 years before I started my writing career there University of Pennsylvania’s Daily Pennsylvanian newspaper didn’t allow women on staff).
Internet Propaganda Techniques
Propaganda is the art of mass persuasion. Propaganda is not inherently positive or negative, it is only a method of communication. Advertising, political organization, and religious proselytization are all activities that rely heavily on propaganda techniques. Propaganda techniques are defined by the medium. The preeminent mediums for propaganda have historically been public speaking, radio, film, and television. As the internet has become a medium of mass communication, it has also become a propaganda tool.
Thieves, Hustlers, and Mafia: The Economics of Crime (June 2008)
[This was the last paper I wrote for an undergrad class, and probably the best I wrote while in college. Essentially, it is a big middle finger all around, although I bury my point in allegory.
